What is DLT?
DLT stands for Distributed Ledger Technology — the same tamper-proof, blockchain-style record-keeping used in other secure systems. In the context of Indian SMS, TRAI uses it as a shared registry that all telecom operators check before delivering any commercial message.
It was introduced under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) to cut down spam and fraudulent SMS. The result: only verified businesses, using approved sender IDs and pre-approved content, can reach Indian mobile users with commercial texts.
How does DLT registration work?
DLT registration usually happens in three core stages:
- Entity registration: you register your business (the "principal entity") on an operator's DLT portal — Jio, Airtel, Vi, or BSNL.
- Header (sender ID) registration: you register the 6-character name that will appear as the SMS sender.
- Template registration: every message variation is submitted and approved in advance, mapped to a header and a category (transactional, service, or promotional).
When you send an SMS, the operator checks the registry: is the entity registered? Is the header approved? Does the content match a template? If any answer is no, the message is blocked.
