An SMS aggregator is a company that holds commercial SMPP connections to multiple mobile operators — often across countries — and resells that access as a single API, so you don't have to negotiate and maintain a direct bind with every telco yourself. In India, that means holding registrations across each DLT-connected carrier route (Jio, Airtel, Vi), not just one.

• Why it matters: this is where reliability actually gets decided. Two providers can both call themselves an "SMS gateway" while one is a licensed aggregator with direct routes and the other is reselling someone else's capacity three hops removed. If you're evaluating vendors for sending bulk SMS, ask whose route it actually is.
