Mobile Number Portability

MNP is a subscriber's ability to keep their MSISDN when switching mobile operators. In India, TRAI's process runs on SMS: text PORT <10-digit number> to 1900, get a 4-digit Unique Porting Code valid about four days, and the port completes within a few working days intra-circle, or roughly a week across circles.

TRAI recorded around 14.46 million MNP requests in May 2026 alone across 1.29 billion+ wireless connections, this is routine churn, not an edge case.

• Why it matters: after a number ports, your platform's routing has to know which operator now owns it, or the message heads toward the old operator's SMSC and either fails or detours through a route that shouldn't handle it. Aggregators running stale HLR/MNP lookups are a quiet cause of delivery drop-off on a subset of a list.
