Conversational Marketing: Definition, Examples and Strategy

Drift named the category and built its first shape around one tactic: replace the contact form with a chat widget, qualify the visitor live, book the meeting before intent cools. That era closed in March 2026 when Clari and Salesloft announced Drift's sunset. The widget is not coming back.

What replaced it is broader and, for Indian businesses, more familiar. The conversation doesn't start on a website. It starts on WhatsApp, or on a missed call, or on an RCS card in the default messaging app. The buyer was never going to fill in a form.

Three things separate this from messaging automation. It's built on what the person tells you rather than what a segment predicts. It has a next step in mind before the conversation opens. And it accepts that the right next step is sometimes "nothing right now" — a strategy that can only ever push forward will burn an opt-in list faster than any frequency cap.

The failure mode is easy to describe and common to see. A brand launches conversational marketing and ships scheduled broadcasts with a reply option nobody staffs. Customers reply. Nothing answers. The next campaign gets blocked at the quality rating, and the team concludes the channel doesn't work.
